When one views the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), one can’t help but ask, who is the real benefactor of this agreement? Let’s take a look at the countries other than ours that are involved. We have Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. Researchers have documented that these six countries have a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $85 billion. To put in perspective, as James Gass points out in the American Conservative, this is approximately the same GDP as the city of New Haven, Connecticut.
