Data Mining Figured In Dispute Over NSA

A fierce dispute within the Bush administration over a National Security Agency warrantless surveillance program in early 2004 was related to concerns among officials about the NSA's searches of massive computer databases, the New York Times reported yesterday. The data mining is linked to a dramatic chain of events in March 2004, including threats of resignation from senior Justice Department officials and an unusual nighttime visit by White House aides to the hospital bedside of then-Attorney General John D. Ashcroft, the Times reported on its Web site. The resignation threats and hospital visit have been reported previously, as has the NSA's data mining efforts.
