A Thunderous Roar Across This Country
Moore Vows To Continue FightPRATTVILLE -- A "thunderous roar that's going to be heard across this country" will be the result of the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal to hear his case on the controversial Ten Commandments monument, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore predicted Monday. Moore's attorneys asked the high court to hear the case after lower federal courts ruled that Moore violated the Constitution's ban on government promotion of religion when he placed the monument in the rotunda of the Alabama Judicial Building two years ago. Moore expressed disappointment with the high court's decision Monday during an afternoon news conference at The Legends at Capitol Hill.

Kennesaw Mayor to Sign 'Biblical' Law
Kennesaw could join a growing list of Georgia locales allowing God to be acknowledged in public buildings. Mayor Leonard Church is expected to sign a proclamation Monday making it legal. It's the latest action to be taken in a controversial debate about posting the Ten Commandments in public buildings in Georgia. Church says it's the government's responsibility to acknowledge God. He says it's purely coincidental that he will be reading the proclamation a day before Kennesaw's local elections.
The New Tyrants (Above the Law)
When the Federal Court delivered its opinion, this was their reasoning: Chief Justice Moore testified candidly that his purpose in placing the monument in the Judicial Building was to acknowledge the law and sovereignty of the God of the Holy Scriptures, and that it was intended to acknowledge God’s overruling power over the affairs of men. (This was found to be an unconstitutional premise for the monument.)

PHILADELPHIA – Field preacher Michael Marcavage of the Philadelphia-based Repent America was found not guilty by Judge Joyce S. Kean of obstructing highways and other public passageways in the Common Pleas Court of Philadelphia. The arresting officer, Sergeant Warren Edwards, ignored the subpoena sent out by the District Attorney’s office and did not show up for trial.
Anglican Clergy Won't Recognize 'Gay' Bishop
LONDON -- Anglicans refused Monday to recognize the consecration of an openly gay bishop in New Hampshire and accused the Episcopalian Church in the United States of "declaring independence." From Latin America to Africa, prelates thundered their disapproval of Canon Gene Robinson's appointment which has plunged the 450-year-old Church into one of its biggest crises. "The devil has clearly entered the Church. God cannot be mocked," said Kenya's Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi who cut all ties with the U.S. Church.
Abuse Scandal Prompts U.S.
Checks on Lay Catholics
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Lynn Blake is one of thousands of Catholic parishioners in this city in upstate New York who just want to help their church. So why are they being forced to take part in sexual abuse education classes and allow investigators to sift through their backgrounds as if they were ex-convicts? "It's ironic that we have to go through this training because of some priests and their heinous acts," says Blake, a 43-old-mother of two who volunteers at St. Teresa of Avila School in Albany.
Court Won't Clarify Free-Speech Protection
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court disappointed news organizations Monday by refusing to clarify free-speech protections for journalists sued after they criticize people or products. Justices declined to stop a lawsuit against the publisher of Consumer Reports magazine over the negative road test ratings it gave the Suzuki Samurai because of potential rollovers. Consumers Union, which reports on the safety of products like child safety seats and lawn mowers, argued that a lower court ruling in its case will silence reporters who have information about dangerous products but fear costly lawsuits.
Teens Learn Sex is 'Safe' from TV
One episode of Friends might have taught teenagers more about risky sex than hours of adult preaching and reached far more children than any school's sex education program, a survey suggests today. ''TV gets lambasted all the time for doing bad things, but this suggests it has just as much potential to do good,''[?] says survey leader Rebecca Rebecca Collins, a RAND senior behavioral scientist. Collins surveyed 506 frequent viewers of Friends, ages 12 to 17, within a few weeks of the episode and then six months later. Her report in Pediatrics shows that many got the ''safe sex'' facts. About two-thirds of viewers recalled how condom failure had resulted in pregnancy.

Parents Have 3 Months to
Enroll in Prepaid Tuition Plan
Florida's prepaid college tuition program opened a three-month window for enrollment Monday. With more than 900,000 accounts already purchased, the plan is the largest in the nation. The program guarantees a child's tuition at any state public university or community college. By locking in the price at today's tuition rates, families get a break on about half the cost of sending a child to a "public" university in 18 years. Students with prepaid tuition plans can also opt for an accredited private school or an out-of-state school but the plan then provides a value comparable to the cost of tuition at a state public school.
Surgeon General, Others Announce
New Anti-Obesity Survey, Database
NEW ORLEANS -- As more and more kids get fat, it's time to get coordinated, creating a way for people who run exercise, nutrition, healthy baby and other anti-obesity programs to get together, the surgeon general said Monday. "We are seeing Generation Y grow into Generation XL, and this weight gain has long-term health consequences," Dr. Richard H. Carmona said. "We need to work together across all sectors of American life to address this public health crisis."
No More Darkness or Night
for This 'Born-Again Liberal'
Like most people, I was born liberal. I was always wanting someone to give me things I hadn't earned. If I didn't get what I wanted, I cried. Some years later, I entered the dark period of my life. I became a conservative. Now, after all those wasted years, I'm a born-again liberal. My conversion came about after years of reading columns by Molly Ivins, Greg Sagan and William Seewald. As a dastardly conservative, I believed that working people should not have their money taken away by the government and given to those who don't work.
Now, after my conversion, it's plain to see that having our money taken away and given to others is nothing more than high-minded compassion for the non-productive.
