Dobson's 'Gay Unions' Endorsement

Why Does Dobson Want Colorado to
Accept Vermont’s Gay Unions?

To: National Desk

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co., Feb. 22/Covenant News Wire Service/ -- Dr. Paul Cameron, Chairman of the Family Research Institute, a Colorado Springs based think-tank, asked Tuesday why Dr. James Dobson wants Colorado to give legal status to Vermont’s homosexual unions. “That’s what this legislation proposes,” Cameron said. “Dr. Dobson either endorses that practice or he has failed to read the bill carefully.”

Here is what the proposed legislation says:

“(1) Domestic partners registered pursuant to another state’s law shall be deemed to have executed a reciprocal beneficiary agreement if the parties otherwise qualify as reciprocal beneficiaries pursuant to section 14-15-103. Domestic partners who do not qualify to become reciprocal beneficiaries [i.e., could get married] shall not be deemed to have a valid legal status within the state of Colorado as domestic partners.… [this law pertains if] (b) both parties are present or reside in this state.”

“In other words,” Cameron said, “if a homosexual couple has registered as a domestic partner union in Vermont. Colorado will recognize that union as the equivalent of signing a “reciprocal beneficiary agreement.” So Colorado would be recognizing, indeed validating Vermont law in this regard.”

“Why,” he asked, “should Colorado recognize a domestic partner law enacted in a state whose population has an entirely different set of values? Dr. Dobson has emphasized that the reciprocal beneficiary bill is not the same thing as domestic partner legislation. Yet the law recognizes domestic partner laws, thereby giving them legal status in Colorado.”

Cameron pointed out that Dobson has called those who disagree with him “vicious” and has complained that people have questioned his integrity.

“The criticisms I have read have been fair and in most cases even respectful. I don’t think that he should resent a request for him to explain his position on such matters as the recognition of domestic partner liaisons.”
