Used and Manipulated

Dear Daddy:

In this upcoming Presidential Election, I find myself having a lot of trouble deciding between the two candidates. I read everything I can, and plan to listen to all their speeches and debates. I take my duties as a citizen very seriously, and consider my vote important. Any advice?

Dear Un:

You are right about one thing--your vote is the most important one in this election! Why? Because your vote is available! Most votes aren't!

So, people like you get virtually all the attention! Doesn't that make you feel good? It ought to make you nauseous, however.

Because you are being used and manipulated.

The idea that a Presidential election is about candidates, first and foremost, is a terrible fiction--one that the voters fall for all the time.

I knew who I was going to vote for in this election many years ago--decades ago, in fact. The party that has at least the most shreds of Biblical Christianity left in its programs and candidates in general, of course, would get my vote. Not much of a choice these days, when you look at what little practical differences remain, but the real fact is that we have an important opportunity to participate in the greatest peaceful power shifting (or power holding) procedure the world has ever known.

The whole thing, above the city and sometimes county level, is about parties. Two parties. To the extent that voters don't know that, they get duped and used. Sidetracked.

Pick a party, and work to fix it -- or replace its leadership. Parties go bad, you know. Want to have an effect greater than 1000 votes? Get together with a few neighbors and friends and take over a precinct at the next opportunity. A few hundred thousand people deciding to do that could turn a party inside out in a heartbeat.

Don't think you are somehow exercising good citizenship by trying to focus on a couple of players, and what they may or may not really stand for. Take a look at their party's track record and platform -- that speaks louder than their lips.
