'Dangerous' Goods?
Dear Daddy:
I didn't see you at the "Million Mom March," and I bet is wasn't just
because you are not a mom! How you can look yourself in the mirror every day
after supporting 'gun rights' the way you do, beats me! Don't you feel at
least some responsibility for all the carnage going on? To say that gun
manufacturers are not responsible also is just as ridiculous. Dangerous
products ought to be banned, or at least the manufacturers ought to pay part
of the price of repairing the damage they cause! Don't give me any of that
"Guns don't kill people, people kill people" stuff either!
Stop the Violence
Dear Stop:
As I was thinking about your letter, it hit me that very, very few people
have ever been killed by guns! It's the bullets and other projectiles that
do the killing! A gun without ammo is only a blunt object, and not nearly as
handy as a hammer or an ax!
But ammo -- now, there is something dangerous to focus on! Or is it? Let's
see just how dangerous ammo is, compared to many other things going on in our
society.
Figures I have seen accounting for the annual manufacturing and importing
of ammo in the U.S. show there is in excess of 5 billion rounds per year
purchased by the civilians here! (This is not counting the military/police
use!)
So, what is the death rate on these 'dangerous' goods? Accidental, self
defense or premeditated murder -- these are almost infinitesimal! You have a
greater chance of winning any lottery or getting struck by lightning every
month than the chance that a particular bullet will find you!
How do other things stack up on the safety list: Drownings per swimming
pool, Death or brain injury per number of bicycles in use, deaths or spinal
cord injuries per number of trampolines, deaths per doctor or pharmacist for
improperly dispensed medicine? Highway deaths due to crashes involving cell
phone usage, per number of cell phones? Do I have to supply the actual
figures? All these other things probably run 1000 to 1 million times more
statistically dangerous than the accidental deaths or murders related to
ammo/guns.
But none of these really dangerous activities is useful for subjugating a
people -- for consolidating power in the hands of a few. By demonizing good
gun owning people, their organizations and reducing their ability to defend
themselves, the march towards tyranny is turning into a trot. Talk about
"hate crimes".
Ammo -- probably the safest product in America. And absolutely least abused.
And, by the way, did you know there is a special 11 percent excise tax on the sale of all guns and ammo? These billions of dollars go into the Federal Treasury. Probably some of it spent on the area where you Million Mommers Marched.
You're welcome.
