Who Do You Serve?

Dear Daddy:

You seem like a reasonably intelligent guy. How can you line up with so many losing groups and positions? You seem to be against just about everything I am for -- and I am a totally mainstream kind of guy! You come across as anti-choice, anti-evolution, anti-everything! Do you really think the majority of the people out here can be so wrong in the ways they feel about so many things? Do you really think there are religious answers to many of today's serious societal problems? Secular problems demand secular answers!

-- Wondering about you.

Dear Wondering:

When I was younger, I didn't think I was "religious," just as you don't seem to think you are. As I matured, I came to realize that all human beings are unavoidably and incurably "religious." There are too many questions that demand answers that are not "scientifically provable" by the world's standards.

The very word "religious" is so misunderstood. It has been twisted from its original meaning -- its actual meaning. The Latin religare: to bind together. This describes much of what is truly "religious." What are your theories, your stories, your beliefs of what makes sense of the universe? What are your unifying principles? This is your true religion, boy. You think it is churches and solemn observances and rituals. These things can be made into a religion, but they are not what it is all about.

We humans must operate on faith. In what do we put our faith? Things that appear to work? Things validated by having large numbers of adherents? Your unproved and unprovable ideas about the nature of man and his soul, and the origin and purpose (or purposelessness) of the world and the universe -- however cloaked as scientific, and rammed down the throats of millions of captured kids in a million classrooms. This is pure religion, administered with religious zeal, seeking mass conversions for political and spiritual purposes.

Think there is hope in "secular" approaches? What does this oft-used word even mean? Again, from the Latin root saecularis: temporal (opposed to eternal). It is not non-religious, as our Supreme court and various public battlers would have it; rather, it is more correctly a religious explanation of things that has no view of eternal reality. It allows nothing outside of itself to hold it accountable, no standards to meet. It is based on the denial that there even is anything outside of, or beyond itself. This is the god you serve, to the extent that you deny the True and Living God.

Yep, I am a representative of a tiny, tiny minority of believers, considering the world's current population. But even when there were only Twelve standing with the One, Truth was Truth.

Daddy.
