Insanity Defense Will Be
Hard Sell For Accused Mother

MINNEAPOLIS - Experts say a mother charged in the killing of her infant daughter faces an uphill battle if she chooses to use postpartum depression as the basis for an insanity defense. It's difficult in any state for mothers to win with that defense, but it's especially difficult to win in Minnesota. It says only people who do not know right from wrong or who do not understand the nature of their acts can be found not guilty by reason of mental illness.

Faith Is No Defense For Breast-Feeding Mom

RAVENNA - At best, the misdemeanor trial of 29-year-old Catherine Nicole Donkers is likely to go down in history as a little out of the ordinary. In a packed courtroom Wednesday morning Portage County Municipal Judge Donald H. Martell ruled that the woman's husband, Brad L. Barnhill, 46, cannot act as her lawyer or substitute for her as the defendant in the case. Donkers, who was arrested May 8 after she admitted breast-feeding her infant daughter while driving on the Ohio Turnpike, had cited the couple's religious beliefs in trying to convince the judge that only her husband could answer for her public acts.

About 15 pro-lifers with the California Life Coalition picketed Hillary Clinton at a book signing event at a swank La Jolla (San Diego) bookstore. Clinton fans began lining up the night before for their opportunity to purchase Clinton's book, Living History. By the time pro-lifers arrived, the crowed had swelled to over 300 and quickly surpassed 1,000 by mid-morning. Pro-lifers had no sooner gotten across the street, lined with satellite trucks, before being surrounded by media. Within moments of displaying large graphic signs of aborted babies in the first trimester, Clinton supporters surrounded the pro-lifers and began shoving and covering their signs.

City, Church Agree On Protest Ordinance

SALEM, Indiana -- The city and members of an anti-abortion group have settled a lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of an ordinance that regulates where and when groups can hold protests. The law, which was scheduled to go into effect July 8, would have required protesters to pay a $100 fee four weeks before a scheduled rally. City officials say the catalyst for the ordinance was John Lewis and his Old Paths Baptist Church in Campbellsburg. The group is known for picketing with signs depicting aborted fetuses and rants against homosexuals. Seven people associated with Lewis’ church have been arrested on charges related to picketing and preaching.

The alleged deal, offered through Peterson's attorney, would have come as police were publicly refusing to name Peterson as a suspect or rule him out in the disappearance of his wife, Laci.
