Mom's Trial Starts in Starved Children Case

Opening statements are scheduled in the Dallas trial of a woman accused of starving three of her children kept locked in a hotel bathroom for as long as nine months. Abneris Santiago is charged with three counts of injury to a child. The 31-year-old woman's trial begins one day after co-defendant Alfred Santiago received a 99-year prison term for injury to a child and continuous sexual abuse. Police found the three children shut inside a Dallas extended-stay hotel room's bathroom last summer. Officials say the 11-year-old girl and her half brothers, ages 10 and 5, were emaciated and filthy.
