Wake County Commissioners Vote To Restore Elective Abortion Coverage
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Wake County Commissioners voted Monday on a measure to restore elective abortion coverage to the county's health plan for employees. County Manager David Cooke removed elective abortions from the health plan last month on the advice of County Attorney Scott Warren. Warren said the change puts the county in line with policy for federal employees, and he also cited a 1981 State Supreme Court case. He said the county could face a lawsuit if the change wasn't made. Board Chairman Tony Gurley said he supports keeping elective abortions out of the county's health plan. "We're following what the Supreme Court has said. So we're not allowed to cover elective abortions," he said. Commissioner Stan Norwalk proposed a resolution Monday during the board's regular meeting to restore elective abortion coverage. Norwalk said the law can be interpreted differently, and he said it's up to commissioners to determine what the county's employee health plan includes. "The reason I'm bringing it up again is because I don't think we should be bullied into what we do," he said. After Cooke removed elective abortions from the health plan last month, the measure was put before the board, which deadlocked 3 to 3 on the consent agenda, which included the measure. Democrat Harold Webb, still recovering from a stroke, was absent at the meeting.Click Here For The Full Story......
