Accused Killer Takes the Stand
WILX TV-10 News Lansing"I hate myself, I have for a long time," Harlan Drake told jurors Monday. Drake said he's never been the same since he was involved in a 2004 car accident that left two teenagers dead. "I asked the officer, did I just kill two people?" Drake said. The accident wasn't his fault and he was never charged, but Drake said he never could shake the guilt. Despite therapy and prescription drugs, he said he was very "screwed up." "I even said to my family I thought of killing everyone then myself so they wouldn't be sad I was dead," Drake said, "but thought that wasn't a good idea." A psychiatrist as well as Drake's mother also took the stand Monday -- the defense laying the foundation that Drake was temporarily insane in September of 2009 when he shot anti-abortion activist James Pouillon and gravel pit owner Mike Fuoss to death.

Psychiatrist: Harlan Drake Suffered from 'Severe Psychosis'
(Defendant was so depressed from a traffic accident involving the death of two people that he decided to go out and kill people so he could "end his own life"? Riiight!)

SHIAWASSEE COUNTY, Michigan -- A forensic psychiatrist told the court today that Harlan Drake suffered from "severe psychosis" the day of the Sept. 11, 2009 shootings, and could not be criminally responsible. Drake is accused of gunning down two men and intending to kill a third that day, and his trial began last week. Defense attorneys began calling their witnesses on Thursday, and they are seeking a legal insanity defense. Dr. Emanuel Tanay told the court today that Drake's behavior was goal-directed, but his goal was psychotic as he wanted to end his own life. "There are many ways to destroy yourself, to destroy your life ... Mr. Drake has been successful," he testified today.
