War Protesters File Suit Against City & State

Representative of Westboro Baptist Church, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, files a lawsuit against the city of Saint Joseph and the state of Missouri. The church is well-known for its protests at funerals of American service men and women killed in action overseas. Church members say their deaths represent punishment of the United States for supporting homosexuality, and abortion among other things.

Westboro Baptist Files Suit Against City of St. Joseph
A Kansas church has targeted city of St. Joseph in a lawsuit. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church protested a soldier's funeral here in St. Joseph in 2006. Now the daughter of Fred Phelps -- founder of the controversial church -- is waging a new battle over the city's ordinance banning protests at soldier's funerals. "We have to start somewhere, and you guys have the extra ordinary measure of a city ordinance," said Shirley Phelps-Roper. In a recently-filed lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union, Phelps-Roper claims a city ordinance violates her freedom of speech.
