Nebraska Strikes Out With 'Child Dumping Law'
By Skyla BryantWhat in the world is American government coming to? A Nebraska state law recently made headlines and garnered national attention on the subject of child abandonment. The law was evidently passed, according to one Associated Press account written by Nate Jenkins, with the best of intentions - to save the lives of newborn infants. I've heard it said bad government starts with good intentions. Unfortunately, the Nebraska legislature neglected to draft its law with any type of age specification, allowing parents of children from 0 to 18 to leave their offspring at state-licensed hospitals without legal ramifications. The result? A total of 18 children, the AP reports, from toddlers to teenagers, have been abandoned by their parents since the law's inception. Some of the children were even brought to state-sanctioned Nebraska facilities from other states.
