Analysis: Stem Cell Research Opponents Raise Future Concerns

The proposal on the November ballot bans the buying or selling of human embryos for stem cell research, instead requiring that embryos be voluntarily donated and left over from fertility treatments. The embryos only could be donated if they were unfit for implantation and otherwise would be thrown away. But it’s true that some California scientists and biotech entrepreneurs are pushing to change rules in that state that ban compensating women for eggs donated for research. Researchers argue that an egg shortage fueled by the payment ban is what’s kept them from making the advances they say would prove the potential of embryonic stem cell research.
