New FLDS mom is adult, CPS says; others taking hope
State officials announced Tuesday that a woman from a polygamist sect who gave birth April 29 is an adult, giving 26 other women who say they are adults hope that their claims will be heard. Child Protective Services filed a notice with state District Judge Barbara Walther's court in San Angelo that Pamela Jeffs, who gave birth in San Marcos, isn't a minor. Another sect member gave birth Monday in Travis County. Her husband, Rolan Daniel Jessop, is trying to have her certified as an adult. She says she is 22. FLDS attorney Rod Parker says CPS is trying to classify the women as minors to keep custody of the children. Parker also accuses CPS of seeking a sympathetic judge by trying to move Jessop's wife and newborn out of Travis County.

The unremarkable face of unspeakable evil: A Sheriff's Deputy stands ready to use whatever force may be required to compel an FLDS mother to surrender her children to the State. Most of the harm in the world is done by good people, and not by accident, lapse, or omission. It is the result of their deliberate actions, long persevered in, which they hold to be motivated by high ideals toward virtuous ends… [I]n periods when millions are slaughtered, when torture is practiced, starvation enforced, oppression made a policy, as at present over a large part of the world, and as it has often been in the past, it must be at the behest of very many good people, and even by their direct action, for what they consider a worthy object.
