Suspect in Pregnant Woman's Death Charged With Double Murder
SANTA CRUZ -- Santa Cruz County prosecutors said today they have charged a former store manager with two counts of murder in the 2006 slaying of a pregnant Ben Lomond woman who worked as a cashier at the store. Michael McClish, 39, is already serving 18 years to life in prison for a separate conviction on charges of rape, sodomy and assault with a hatchet. McClish emerged early on as a suspect in the slaying of Joanna "Asha" Veil, who disappeared Sept. 9, 2006, after leaving work at Ben Lomond Market, authorities said. Veil was almost seven months pregnant, and her fetus also is considered a murder victim, District Attorney Bob Lee said today.
