Late Abortions Set Record In Denmark

The number of abortions after the first trimester have risen sharply due to scans not being offered until the second trimester. More mothers than ever are having late abortions, primarily due to the timing of scans that determine defects in the foetus. According to figures from the Board of Health's Abortion Appeals Committee, a record 818 women received abortions after the first trimester in 2007. A main reason for the increasing number of late abortions is ironically linked to the progress of technology. Nuchal translucency scans for Down's syndrome and a later scan for physical defects are only effective after the first trimester, and therefore parents can only find out about the abnormalities after the first 12 weeks.
