Campaign Against 'Personhood' Amendment Launched
A group of doctors, politicians and reproductive-rights leaders campaigned today from the Capitol steps against a ballot initiative to define personhood as starting at the moment of fertilization. Calling their campaign "Protect Families, Protect Choices," group members said they represent a broad coalition opposing the amendment extending constitutional rights and due process of law to the unborn. They said such a law would allow the government to intrude into Coloradans' private medical decisions (sic). Mary Fairbanks, a doctor who teaches general-practice physicians at St. Anthony's Family Medicine Residency, said the amendment scared her because it was vague and deceptive. Initiative supporters, led by Colorado for Equal Rights, have until May 13 to submit just over 76,000 voter signatures to qualify the measure for the November ballot.
