Mother Sent to Prison for Killing Newborn

GOSHEN, N.Y. -- Judge Jeffrey G. Berry spoke sternly to Christine Maher on behalf of the unnamed daughter whose death she caused last year. "Children are a gift from God," Berry told the 39-year-old woman yesterday in Orange County Court, "and when we receive a child, it's our job to be a parent to that child. It's our job to take care of that child. You have forfeited all those roles of a parent, because it was going to be inconvenient." Maher was afraid she'd lose her boyfriend if she gave birth. So she concealed her pregnancy, covered up the birth in mid-September and allowed the baby to die, leaving the corpse in an old box truck outside the home she rented on Echo Valley Road in Deerpark. Berry sentenced Maher to (only) 10 years in state prison for first-degree manslaughter, in accordance with a plea bargain.
