Lawsuit Contends Woman Died After Botched Abortion

The mother of a Riverside woman who died of toxic shock syndrome after allegedly undergoing an abortion procedure at Planned Parenthood filed a malpractice suit against the charity and a Riverside hospital this week. The lawsuit alleges that Edrica Goode, 21, went to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Riverside for an abortion on Jan. 31 and that a nurse inserted cervical dilators, meant to prepare patients for the abortion process, despite the fact that Goode had a vaginal infection. The dilators, which are shaped like small sticks and consist primarily of seaweed, became a conduit that spread the infection to the rest of her body, the lawsuit alleges. Goode, a Riverside Community College student and who enjoyed traveling and reading, died on Feb. 14. Full story...

A Riverside woman would still be alive if Planned Parenthood's Riverside clinic hadn't performed an abortion procedure that caused an infection to spread, according to a lawsuit filed by her mother. Aletheia Meloncon on Tuesday filed a wrongful death and medical malpractice lawsuit against Planned Parenthood and Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley on behalf of her daughter, Edrica Goode, in Riverside County Superior Court. Her Van Nuys attorney, Jack Schuler, wouldn't say how much money Meloncon seeks.
