Governor Vetoes Anti-Abortion Bill

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Gov. Brad Henry vetoed legislation Wednesday that would have placed new restrictions on abortions in Oklahoma, saying he feared it would add to the suffering of poor women with troubled pregnancies. The bill, approved overwhelmingly by the Oklahoma Legislature, would have barred state hospitals, clinics and workers from performing abortions except in cases where the mother’s life was threatened. Henry said the veto was a difficult decision, but the bill “does more harm than good.” Physicians who work at state facilities would have been prohibited from encouraging women to have abortions unless it was considered a life-saving procedure. The Oklahoma State Medical Association and the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association urged a veto.
