CINCINNATI -- Legislation allowing Tennessee drivers to select license plates that say "Choose Life" should have included the option of a pro-choice alternative, a federal appeals court panel was told Wednesday. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in a Tennessee case in which abortion rights proponents say they were being discriminated against. The panel took the case under advisement and did not say when it would rule. The Tennessee Legislature started a specialty license plate program allowing private groups to share in the $35 surcharge paid by supporters to obtain those plates. Over the years, more than 90 plates were created to benefit special interests including parks, colleges, the arts and Tennessee walking horses.
