Planned Parenthood breaks ground on new site
EUREKA -- Fittingly, said board chairwoman Jane Minor, the new building’s gestation should be about nine months. That is, Six Rivers Planned Parenthood should be ready to move in next summer. A group of about 50 -- staff, volunteers and members of the nonprofit organization’s board of directors -- gathered Monday for the ceremonial groundbreaking. The new clinic will have more space and more privacy for patients, said Executive Director Tina Mackenzie. At the current clinic, for example, the front door opens directly into the waiting room. Mackenzie said the new building will have a foyer to create more privacy. It will also have more exam rooms, so patients won’t have to wait as long to get an appointment, she said. Client visits increased from 10,000 in 1996 to close to 17,000 this year, Mackenzie said. The new clinic will be located off Walford Avenue near the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Harris Street.
