Sen. Leahy To Support Roberts' Nomination After Reassurances About Upholding Privacy Rights
U.S. chief justice nominee John G. Roberts received the support of the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who said he is reassured Roberts wouldn't overrule or undercut a woman's right to an abortion. Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy's endorsement put him at odds with Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, who yesterday said he will vote against Roberts. Leahy's support may lead as many as half of the Senate's 44 Democrats to vote for the nominee next week, disappointing liberal groups that have been pressing for solid Democratic opposition to Roberts.
