Fetal Murder Trial Begins Today
The trial of a Richmond man charged with the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, murder of her unborn baby and burglary of her home begins Monday. Richard Bishop will be tried on charges by police that he stabbed Tiffany Watkins, of Richmond, and caused the death of her unborn baby after entering Watkins' Sheridan Street home on March 31, 2004. Bishop was 24 at the time of the incident. Watkins was 21 and was in the 27th week of pregnancy. Police said it was Bishop's baby. The trial is unique because it joins cases across the country which argue the specific rights of unborn babies. In April 2004, the U.S. Senate passed a bill that made the death of a fetus during an assault on a mother a separate offense.
