NEW YORK -- The oral contraceptive pill remains the birth control method of choice for the largest number of American women. It was in 1960 when contraception and family planning were revolutionized by introduction of the first oral contraceptive - Enovid, better known simply as "the Pill." Today, virtually all American women use some form of contraception during their lifetimes, according to the National Center For Health Statistics in Atlanta. Enovid's descendants - the oral contraceptive pills - remain the first choice among women: In a 2002 snapshot by the statistics center, 11.6 million women were using this method.
