Fellow Chronicles writer Tom Piatak came up this theory, one which I whole heartily agree, that the Republicans do not want Roe overturned. Doing so would not end abortion. It would simply send the issue back to the states to decide. Abortion would cease to be a national issue, which it became back in 1973. Such a de-nationalization of Roe would not be in the best interests of the Republican Party. It's not a secret that the Party's base has grown with the help of conservative Democrats, many of them religious Catholics and Protestants, because the Republicans pledged to nominate judges or pass constitutional amendments outlawing abortion.
