Newspaper Examines Increasing Religious
Involvement of Abortion-Rights Groups
The Oakland Tribune on Sunday examined how abortion-rights advocates are beginning to show a "spiritual side" after years of appearing to be "far removed from religion," while the antiabortion movement and religion seemed to be "inextricably linked." The Planned Parenthood Federation of America last year for the first time appointed a national chaplain, and several chaplains serve locally in the organization nationwide. "Planned Parenthood is deeply, firmly on the side of religion," PPFA Interim President Karen Pearl said, adding that religion fundamentally involves ethics and morality, which are essential to the group's work of supporting women's health.
