HOUGHTON -- A controversial anti-abortion group displayed placards with slogans and images of aborted fetuses in Houghton Monday afternoon. The Milwaukee, Wis.-based group Missionaries to the Preborn came to Houghton as part of its American Atrocities Tour, which is visiting 17 cities in Michigan and Wisconsin. Rev. Matt Trewhella, who founded the group in 1990, said the tour is designed to show people the consequences of abortion. The group began using the pictures in 1996. Fifty-five group members lined M-26 and U.S. Highway 41 near Veterans Park in Houghton, passing out pamphlets and displaying placards with magnified pictures, including aborted fetuses and baby parts. Several area residents also participated, Trewhella said. Trewhella said the graphic images are an effective way to dissuade people from getting abortions. "We tried the nice-guy approach for two decades in the pro-life movement and it got us nowhere," he said.
