A woman has been arrested after authorities say she allowed her pregnant teenage daughter to obtain an abortion without giving detectives a chance to examine the fetus and determine whether the girl's stepfather had fathered the child. Palm Beach County sheriff's detectives were investigating the 17-year-old daughter's claim that her stepfather had impregnated her late last year, and they told the mother they needed to test the fetus to determine conclusively whether the stepfather had sex with the teen, according to an arrest report. The stepfather, 40, was arrested Friday on charges of familial or custodial sexual battery — but only after authorities say he had another sexual encounter with the 17-year-old girl in April. The mother, 33, was arrested too, on charges of tampering with physical evidence and child neglect. The unusual charge filed against the mother for allegedly concealing the fetus from law enforcement underscores the difficulty detectives often have in soliciting cooperation from family members in messy familial cases of sexual abuse.
