House Votes to Increase Stem Cell Funding

WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives approved by a significant margin Tuesday a bill to provide more funding for embryonic cell research. The measure carried by a 238-194 vote, but well short of the 290 needed to override a veto that's been repeatedly promised by President Bush. The issue now goes to the Senate where an identical bill is approaching consideration. In the Senate, the bill is sponsored by Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who is chairman of the subcommittee that controls federal funding for medical research.
