The sex of an unborn child should not be revealed unless there is a medical reason for doing so, a top doctor said today. Dr Sudhir Sethi gave his view amid concerns that expectant mothers in Asian communities are having abortions after being told they are having a girl. In some Hindu, Muslim and Sikh families, boys are preferred because they continue the family name and do not require an expensive dowry when they get married. Religious leaders claim Asian women living in Britain are travelling to India to abort female foetuses after their ultra-sound scans reveal the gender.
