For decades, catching a grainy glimpse of a developing baby in the womb through an ultrasound scan has thrilled and awed prospective parents. Such scans are medically important, allowing doctors to check on the developing fetus for heartbeat, movement and some types of birth defects. But now there's a new generation of ultrasound machines, capable of providing detailed, three-dimensional photos - even color video - of a fetus in utero.
