"Vera Drake" at the New York Film Festival today and tomorrow; opens Sunday at the Angelika and Lincoln Square, Manhattan: If a moral outcry erupts over "Vera Drake," Mike Leigh's ninth theatrical feature and the only film in his oeuvre to rival "Topsy-Turvy," it won't be over the fact that its heroine is an abortionist. Or that Leigh treats the termination of pregnancies with his characteristic loathing for the cruelties of class. Or because he leads the 800-pound elephant of hypocrisy around by the trunk. It's because he does all that, and makes Vera Drake a saint.
