Scientist Backs Human Embryo Cloning

ONE of Britain’s leading scientists was today due to call for the development of a comprehensive programme to clone human embryos. Dr Stephen Minger insists cloning embryos for therapeutic purposes would not lead down a "slippery slope" to creating designer babies. Cloning to create duplicate human babies is illegal in Britain, but research into the therapeutic potential of stem cells has been allowed since 2002. This involves harvesting stem cells from non-cloned embryos, but a team of Newcastle University scientists are seeking permission to go a stage further by cloning early-stage embryos for research.
