LINCOLN, Neb. -- A type of abortion banned under a new federal law would cause ``severe and excruciating'' pain, a medical expert on pain testified Tuesday. ``I believe the fetus is conscious,'' said Dr. Kanwaljeet ``Sonny'' Anand, a pediatrician at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He took the stand as a government witness in a trial challenging the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act. Under cross-examination, Anand acknowledged that he believes a less controversial abortion procedure, known as ``dilation and evacuation,'' would cause the same amount of pain to a fetus. An estimated 140,000 D&Es, the most common method of second-trimester abortion, take place in the United States annually.

According to The Associated Press news report, an abortionist in New York, Dr. Carolyn Westhoff, has apparently lied -- under oath -- to a federal judge concerning the helpless struggle children exhibit when attempting to defend themselves from being murdered by an abortionist. When asked by U.S. District Judge Richard C. Casey, "Do the hands ever move?" Westhoff said, "The fetus is limp." But to the contrary, plenty of evidence exists from ultrasound recorded abortions that violent movement is clearly seen as children attempt to move away from the abortionist's knife. Planned Parenthood opened its new North Austin clinic. The new location is on Research Boulevard, near Burnet Road. It's the only Planned Parenthood facility in Austin that offers vasectomy services for men. Meanwhile construction continues on a controversial Planned Parenthood facility in South Austin on Ben White. That clinic plans to offer abortion services. The original contractor on that project backed out of the deal after public outcry from abortion opponents.
