Counties Compete to Welcome a Murder TrialSAN JOSE, Calif. -- To some it may sound crass, but some San Francisco Bay Area officials are hoping to lure Scott Peterson's trial to a courtroom in their communities, and evidently no disrespect is intended. The judge in the case, Al Girolami of Stanislaus County Superior Court, is to decide on Tuesday where to hold the trial. State officials say San Mateo, Santa Clara and Alameda Counties in the Bay Area are in contention, as is Orange County in Southern California.

Atlantic County investigators still know little about a baby girl whose body was found Saturday afternoon in a laundry bag that washed ashore in Ventnor, N.J. The county's medical examiner ruled that the baby had been strangled shortly after birth, and that her body had been in the frigid Atlantic Ocean for one to two days.

A few more sentences, and then, it is signed, "always and unconditionally, your mommy."

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Right-to-die and right-to-life proponents continue to square off in the widely publicized case of Terri Schiavo, a 40-year-old disabled woman whose husband is seeking the removal of her feeding and hydration tubes. Denver-based End of Life Choices -- formerly known as the Hemlock Society -- launched a $60,000 campaign in December throughout Florida, where the Schiavo case is in the courts, to raise public awareness of living wills and other instruments for decision-making regarding medical and therapeutic care, according to an Associated Press report.
Push Made to Change Fetus Rights in Virginia
Virginia legislators have proposed nine bills this General Assembly session that would give individual legal rights to a fetus killed or injured by a criminal act. If the bills are passed, prosecutors could potentially charge people injuring or killing a fetus with two crimes - one for the fetus, one for the pregnant mother. Prosecutors in 28 states already can charge the unlawful killing of a fetus as murder or manslaughter. Virginia is among the minority of states without a fetal homicide law.
Deadly Abortion Pill RU-486 Claims Two More Lives
LONDON, UK -- The British government revealed that two women died there as a result of taking the controversial abortion pill, RU-486. When the drug became available in Britain, the Committee on Safety of Medicines had received two reports of "suspected fatal reactions in association with the use of Mifegyne [RU-486]."

New Zealand's highest-paid abortion consultant earned $158,000 in Justice Ministry fees last year, signing off more than 1800 abortions. Most consultants are also employed by district health boards, some as salaried operating surgeons who perform abortions. Those doctors earn a salary from the health board on top of the $87.50 from the ministry for approving each abortion as a consultant.
