D&X Abortion Supporters Go To Court
Before Bush Signs Ban Into Law
Opponents of the congressional ban on a type of late-term abortion went to court Friday, filing three federal lawsuits seeking to block legislation they say threatens the health and constitutional rights of women. The new law, expected to be signed by President Bush on Wednesday, would ban certain types of abortion procedures on fetuses that are roughly 14 weeks or older, doctors say. Opponents of the procedures call them partial-birth abortions. Friday's legal moves were an unusual move by Planned Parenthood, the Center For Reproductive Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union, because the lawsuits were lodged before the measure became law.
Girl, 16, Admits Murdering 1-Month-Old Infant
A 16-year-old Grapevine girl admitted Friday that she killed a 1-month-old boy who was a foster child in her parents' home. The girl and her attorneys stipulated in court that she had killed the baby, Trenton Robbins, by hitting him in the head or hitting his head against something, according to evidence presented at Friday's hearing. An autopsy showed that Trenton died of massive head injuries. The girl, whose name is being withheld because of her age, pleaded guilty to the juvenile equivalent of capital murder during a hearing Friday. She could face up to 40 years in juvenile and adult prisons when she is sentenced Nov. 12. Prosecutors had sought to have the girl certified as an adult because of the seriousness of the crime, her age and the fact that she had twice tried to run away from home.

Law Review After Child Killed for Cleft Lip
ABORTION laws could be tightened when the High Court considers whether doctors broke the law when they terminated a pregnancy at six months because the woman did not want to give birth to a baby with a cleft lip and palate. The case was launched after a Cambridge student, who herself underwent corrective surgery for a congenital jaw abnormality, was concerned when she learned that an abortion had taken place after 24 weeks for the sole defect of cleft lip and palate. Joanna Jepson wants to force the courts to clarify what constitutes a “serious handicap.” The High Court in London will now be asked to decide whether a cleft lip and palate can be considered a “serious handicap”.

New Teen Abortion Rules Set
Five years ago, Colorado voters said they wanted to make sure girls 17 and younger notified their parents before they got abortions. After a lengthy federal court battle, a law that does just that will go into effect Sunday, but it isn't the measure that voters approved. That one was struck down by the courts. Instead, a new law that legislators crafted earlier this year to correct problems cited in the court fight will take effect. Starting Sunday, when a girl 17 or younger seeks an abortion, the doctor must notify her parents or guardian in writing 48 hours before the procedure. There is no criminal penalty for failure to notify, but the physician is liable in a civil suit for damages. (Read: Christians Murdering Babies)
Ending "Legal" Abortion
The pro-life forces have unwittingly adopted strategies that reinforce the opposition's rhetoric and undermine their own. As a result, there are any number of politicians who qualify as pro-life so long as they support any measure, no matter how modest, limiting a woman's right to an abortion. This must end.
