Utah Law Punishing Harm To Unborn Children Stirs Up Debate

Four bullets killed Susan MacGuire, including one to the back of the head. But it's the bullet that pierced the South Ogden woman's stomach, just above her navel, that has stirred legal debate. MacGuire was pregnant and that bullet severed the umbilical cord, sliced through her fetus and put a hole in the placenta. Roger MacGuire's attorneys have appealed the murder charge involving the fetus to Utah's Supreme Court, arguing the statute equating the death of an unborn child to the death of a living, breathing person is too vague.
